about

Arawa is an apt title, given the ancient Javanese meaning of the word, which
translates to ‘voicing’ or ‘has a voice’. Like most antediluvian linguistics, meanings
can be shaped and changed, have different explanations and metamorphosis over
time, especially when transmuted in English. An apt title indeed, given that the track features Indonesian experimental vocalist Rully Shabara, known mostly for his work in the world renowned Yogyakarta based duo, SENYAWA. His trademark cacophonous textural throat vocalisations introduce the listener to the track, accompanied by Deslandes’ innovative and
subtle guitar passages.

Utomo gives background to the track’s meaning:

“In Arawa, I attempt to embody the role of the pawang - the entity that can control and encapsulate weather formations and patterns. The pawang deals with magic involving weather, wild animals and spirits, but they may also be employed for cases of sorcery. Pawang are usually associated with mountains in contrast to the traditional healers, who are most often linked to rivers. A pawang is said to control elements and entities by chanting and usually by having spirit servants to do their bidding”.

Arawa therefore, acts vocally as a unique call and response contorted duet whereby Utomo assumes the role of the pawang, and Rully, the voice of nature. The track erupts into an extreme wall of cacophonous guitars and gives way to blast beat drumming from Parwata, exercising his own prowess as a diversely talented multi instrumentalist. Returning to a version of its introductory composition, Utomo’s voice gives way to an uncharacteristic calmness as the track closes. Arawa shows the group’s incredible unique ability to create unconventional arrangements that demand the listener’s utmost attention.

about

RINUWAT

RINUWAT is a substantive conceptual project for collaborators Karina Utomo, Rama Parwata and Mike Deslandes. Firmly steeped in Southeast Asian traditional instrumentation and notation, the trio’s ancient Javanese name translates as “to liberate oneself from a curse”. Given the depth and intensity of their compositions, that malediction does indeed demand to be extricated.
